Fraunhofer IMWS in the Technical Textiles Alliance

Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS

The microstructure-based approach of the Fraunhofer IMWS aims at identifying weaknesses and defects in materials, components and systems on the micro- and nanoscale, elucidating the causes and providing solutions for the safeguarding of high-stressed components, for material development and production processes. For this purpose, experimental investigations are carried out on property changes in the manufacturing process with numerical simulation and microstructure analysis.

Competences in the Alliance

  • Development of unidirectionally endless fiber-reinforced thermoplastics
  • Development of hybrid semi-finished products (fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, metal / FRP hybrids)
  • Automated layer and preform production (Ply-Book, component design)
  • Preform technologies for bionically reinforced lightweight structures
  • Spacer preforms for integration into ultralight bearing structures
  • Production of spacer and multilayer fabrics (hybridization with cellulose fibers), functional integration into textile semi-finished products and production of organic sheets
